history }
Penelope Jones was born on February 18, 1982 to Grant and Serinda Jones. She was born five minutes ahead of her twin brother, Jason, therefore making her older. Five minutes is five minutes. Her childhood, for the most part, was a happy one. Her parents were almost like the Romeo and Juliet of the magical world—Grant was from a prominent, old world magical family who could trace their family line back pre-Mayflower while Serinda was the last of the Salazar line, a group of gypsy witches who were less reputable than the Jones family, but still very powerful, and needless to say they didn’t exactly get along with each other. The two of them got married regardless, and raised their children the way they had been raised. Magic wasn’t a secret—magic was a gift, and the Joneses wanted to instill that value from a young age. Serinda used games to help them to learn their basic spellcasting powers, while Grant was the pragmatist and taught them the value of strategy and being prepared.
This lasted until they were ten years-old. A few months after their tenth birthday, demons invaded the house. Serinda, in an effort to protect her children, hid them in an upstairs closet before returning to fight them with her husband. Both of her parents were killed in the battle, leaving Penny and her brother orphans. They were moved to their father’s parents’ house until the matter of their parents’ will was sorted out and then they were placed in the custody of their uncle, Penbrook. This was a hit with the Jones family (read: they exploded in rage), but Rook took them in anyway, settling them into one of the old family homes scattered throughout Southern California.
Where their parents had started them on the basics of magic and strategy, Rook took them two steps further. He taught them to combine the two, as well as to think on their feet and use what was around them. It took some time, but eventually Penny got comfortable enough with him to show him their mother’s Book of Shadows, something she hadn’t been willing to do with her grandparents. He used the book to teach them both sides of their magical lineage in the most streamlined way possible. He raised them for the next eight years of their life, and second to only to Jason, Rook is one of the most important people in Penny’s life.
When the twins turned eighteen, they were considering the options for their future. College would have been the logical choice, but since Jason is almost never logical, he brought his sister the idea of starting their own magic act. Jason was actually very good at it (he was a conjurer as his active power, so it made it easy for him), so while Penny doesn’t act on whims often, she knew when to trust her brother’s gut. They went out on the road together, and never looked back. The act actually became rather successful, due to a slick combination of actual magic and magician’s tricks, and they became the in-demand act up and down the west coast.
Around the time the virus hit, the twins were separated—Jason had gone off to take care of a demon problem, and Penny was supposed to meet up with him after she finished getting paid for their performances. They weren’t too worried about the outbreak (they should have been) and just wanted to move on before things got too crazy. She was driving up from San Diego to meet him when everything started to go to hell, and she got caught up in a quarantine that was supposed to help protect people. (Spoiler: It didn’t.) By the time she was released, the cell towers were down, the phone lines were dead, and she had no way to get in touch with her brother. So she rounded up her whitelighter (don’t leave home without one), got in her van, and drove up to the city where they were supposed to meet Jason. When she found nothing there, she kept driving, following whispers of groups of people hoping that she would eventually find what she was looking for.
personality }
There are three very important facts that you need to know about Penelope Jones:1) She is a witch.
2) She is a twin.
3) She has absolutely no whimsy. At all.
Unfortunately, the last one is very true. Her mother actually told her once that she was far too serious for a child when she was little, and that hasn’t changed as she grew up. While her brother is all ambition, impulse and imagination, Penny got all the logic. She’s the leash that holds Jason back, the one who makes sure he has a backup plan before he jumps in head first, and resigns herself to being the magician’s assistant. Penny has always had a head for strategy—her favorite game is chess—and being the older of the two (even if it’s only by five minutes) to her means that she has to make the hard choices. She handles the money, she does the right research on the demons they fight, and makes sure that the potions are measured properly. She is the one who makes sure the rules are followed so that Jason has more room to be creative. It’s not something she consciously does, but it’s something that colors the ebbs and flows of their relationship and why they work so well together as a team.
At the same time, they have a lot of similar qualities too. As witches, they were taught to be resourceful and quick on their feet just in case something goes wrong, and Penny makes a habit of always thinking two steps ahead. She’s spontaneous because she has to be, and always likes to have the ace in her back pocket. Going into anything unprepared, especially when you’re dealing with something as volatile as demons, is a recipe for ending up dead, and neither of them want to meet that fate anytime soon. They’re prepared so that they can watch out for each other, because they are all they got.
When it comes to magic, she skirts the line with personal gain and exposure every day. She’s lived her entire life surrounded by magic, and she’s neither ashamed of it, nor in favor of hiding it—she just finds clever ways to tell the truth. She’s a practicing Wiccan, works as a magician’s assistant, and incorporates her magic into many aspects of her life. Magic has cost her a lot, but she has good teachers who have taught her to understand the balance and why the battle between good and evil is important. She doesn’t fight any part of her magical heritage, from the debt she owes to the people she’s lost to the fact that it means she’s fighting demons every day. It helps matters that her active power is a subtle one—astral projection isn’t exactly something that’s going to turn heads, but it still manages to get the job done.
Outside of all this, Penny is a regular girl. She has a sharp sense of humor, makes friends easily, and enjoys life fully. After all, she figures it’s the least she could do when there’s the chance her life could turn up short. Given the situation the world’s in, it applies even more. She just needs to actually find people other than Val first.
abilities } Penelope is a witch. She rhymes, and magic happens. She has the active power of astral projection along with her additional abilities of spell casting and potion making. She is also a magician’s assistant, so she’s fairly good with sleight of hand, even if most of her brother’s act is actually magical. She has a bit of martial arts training.
appearance } Penelope is tall (about 5’8”) and fit, with long dark hair and dark eyes. She’s pretty, even if she doesn’t really play it up unless she has to. She’s not a big fan of makeup, unless she’s on stage, and she dresses fairly conservatively, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t have nice legs (see: magician’s assistant).
